Enlightened Thinking

Ok, I have got to get this off my chest. Every other day I see a little piece of yellow laminated plastic tied to a shrub along the Camino. On this plastic is some verbiage, usually in French but occasionally in English. Yesterday’s message to the pilgrim fraternity was,

“Remember that we are not essential to the earth but the earth is essential to us”.

So let’s consider this for a moment. This French woman (I think the name is Lois because, natch, they’ve added their email address), has spent time prior to coming on the Camino writing out inane bits of doggerel and then laminated them and added little bits of cotton to tie them to a tree. Then carried them along the Camino to enlighten all the befuddled people coming after her.

What an incredibly arrogant act. 1) to think anyone wants to read philosophy for the under-fives; 2) to think that anyone will be improved or enlightened by reading this drivel. This is along the lines of “ah, but this is my truth” and “all the world’s faiths – and people of no faith – point to the same One” and “you can’t put a price on the future”. In other words the sort of people with the intellectual capacity of a rather dim amoeba and I think a good way to start saving the planet is by not littering the Camino….
