I missed out on a walk to Finisterre after the Camino Frances and I had always regarded this as unfinished business. The traditional modus operandi for pilgrims was, after all, go to Santiago, pay one’s respects at the tomb of St James, and then proceed to the end of the world where one burnt one’s clothes and returned to life, a new man or woman.

So today I arrived in Finisterre. Lunch was good where a waiter told me that long before the Camino to Santiago, there had been a Camino to Finisterre – which is true, pagans had been making the trek to the cape for centuries before Christ.

The idea is to watch the sun go down. It did, apparently, but behind a wall of driving rain and cloud. I tried to burn an old shirt but the force 9 gale was more than a match for my lighter.
