A much shorter day today, just 18km. This was a very civilised walk - lots of cafes for coffee, and water top-ups. And a rather large and random wall of shells.
Lunch was at an open air place, run by a guy who makes all his food from his own land. It had attracted the Bavarians and it was a cheerful, albeit quite German, meal. The best comedy moment was Dagmar searching for the right English translation of the apparently German word "sandwich". My explanation involving the Earl of Sandwich went down well.... as did the homemade schnapps.
Pontevedra is a largely modern town but there is a historic centre. I stayed at the Restaurante Ruas which was charming.
Pontevedra has two options for getting to Santiago. There is the straight north route through Caldas de Reis which is the most travelled. However, Angela from the Canary Islands (who was also German) had pointed out that there was a Variante Espirituel which headed west at first and then crossed a mountain, staying at a monastery village overnight. Then the idea is to walk to the coast and either walk up to Padron or get a boat. Sounded intriguing.
