I was quite excited about today. The route takes one through the charming little town of Calzadilla de los Barros. It is famous for its church, the fortified El Salvador. It is relatively modern, built in the Gothic-Mudejar style in the 15th century. It is particularly noted for its magnificent altarpiece. But it was closed. The market outside the church was notable for its wide selection of nylon women's underwear which didn't really deserve the same level of attention.

Lunch was at the only open cafe, Bar Dioni. Nice and a friendly dog hung out there. Then 20km or so to Zafra. Zafra gets it name from the Arabic word, Safra, meaning yellow (thus saffron). Why Zafra is associated with yellow, no idea. Stayed on the top floor of a little hotel in the old town, which had the steepest steps imaginable up to the room. Dinner was in a small market square called Plaza Chica - eating al fresco, drinking red wine and enjoying the ambience at the cafe Le Robotica.
