Mertola is an interesting town with a long history. After a short walk, one was back and exploring this delightful place that is at the furthest navigable part of the river.
The town has a castle dating back to the late thirteenth century with a 100 foot keep that is still accessible. The views from the top are superb, including this view of the church which has a neat Santiago Cross over the door.
There is also a paleo-Christian church preserved under a municipal building with a large number of tombstones.
View from the castle.
Dinner was at a family-run restaurant on the edge of town, O Repuxo. The steak was a ridiculous size and washed down with an excellent local red wine.
