Day 34 Requejo to Lubian

Left the little box at a reasonable time and set off on a marvellous bit of the camino. One is constantly coming across the works for the new high speed railway but aside from that the way is unspoilt.

I love the way in which old boots that have just given up the ghost stand as a silent reproach to the abuse they have had. I wonder where these boots started? Seville?

There was a bit of winding around the railroad works but the arrival into Lubian was magical.

The view from the very pleasant Casa Irene in Lubian, complete with the welcome tables for a beer in the foreground.

Having had a second short day, it was nice to walk around the village. Lubian is strung out along the side of a hill with a main road running through the centre but there was sign of civic pride, especially with the neat church (which was open!!) and the Camino-branded fountain. As well as the three wolves - this area used to have a lot of wolves and apparently the town still has a wolf trap nearby; basically a stone pit into which the farmers would lower a lamb which would bleat. The wolf or wolves would jump into the pit, have their meal and then realise that they were trapped when the guys with guns turned up. I saw this factoid on the tourist guide but dinner was a higher priority.

It wasn't hard to choose where to eat; there was only one restaurant, Bar Estrella de Lubián. The food was good and service was by an androgynous young waiter who seemed a bit surly so I made it my mission to get a smile and eventually succeeded. Shared the table with an Irishman who perhaps had taken the pledge - in any event, he found it hard to keep up.
