And it’s back to the VDLP again in late Autumn. Salamanca is an easy train journey from Madrid on the well-organised Spanish railway. I do like the Spanish rail system; clean, efficient, orderly.
The first day was really all about travel but the upside was being able to spend more time in the amazing city of Salamanca. The weather the next day though was a bit of abrupt reminder that I would be walking in the Autumn.

The walk out of Salamanca was a bit wet but it meant that I had been right to bring the heavy-duty poncho. That’s always a big decision - take the weight hit of an Altus poncho or risk taking just lightweight disposable ones (basically clingfilm with a hood). Generally I go for the Altus and I was very glad I had done so this time as the rain increased and the wind picked up.
Today's walk was pretty well straight up following the line of the N630 road / A66 motorway. Fortunately the rain died away and the final part of the day saw me singing to some cows as I wandered a couple of kms to overnight accommodation in a rather nice castle. It was a splendid castle too; lots of low doorways for a tall Englishman to duck under.
