No breakfast in the apartment so breakfast was in a neighbouring cafe. Then headed down to the Alcazar by the Roman bridge - then to a basilica - then to a hippodrome…Merida really is Rome on steroids as befits having been the main Roman city in Iberia. Then back to the apartment to check out for 12.

After carrying a French flag on the first stage, I was a bit more patriotic on the second.

On the way out of town, the huge aqueduct makes an impressive leaving sight. It's apparently nearly 100 ft high and used to run 6 miles.

Another short day to day, as one didn't want to leave Merida too soon. The weather is perfect for walking in April - dry and pleasantly warm. The walk out of town was interesting passing by a big dam,

(the other end of the aqueduct) built by the Romans and still going strong. There were a number of bars full of people enjoying their Sunday lunch and found a nice one at which to drink some beer. Then a pleasant walk to Aljucen where accommodation was a “Roman Villa”. A nice couple had decided to make a replica of a Roman villa in this village, complete with baths. No others there so it was fun getting the Roman experience - warm bath, cold bath, hot bath etc, followed by cava. Then off to the only eating place in town, El Parque. The inevitable football match was on and the excited crowd overspilt onto the pavement.
